The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has announced the recall of Dove Beauty Cream Bar Soap (100g), specifically batch number 81832M 08, which was produced in Germany. This recall is due to the discovery of a harmful chemical impurity in the product. The agency’s action aims to protect consumers from potential health risks associated with the use of this soap.
NAFDAC stated that the Dove Beauty Cream contains Butylphenyl Methylpropional (BMHCA), commonly known as Lilial, which is prohibited in cosmetic products due to its serious health implications. This chemical is linked to reproductive harm and poses risks to unborn children. Additionally, it can cause skin sensitization, leading to allergic reactions in some individuals. NAFDAC emphasized that the presence of this chemical violates the Cosmetic Products Regulation, making the product unsafe for public use.
In its statement, NAFDAC urged the public to remain vigilant about the Dove Beauty Cream Bar Soap recall and to check for any related products. It noted that this specific batch is not listed in its database, which means it is not authorized for sale in Nigeria. The agency also pointed out that other Dove cosmetic products have been recalled or banned in various countries due to the presence of BMHCA, including items like Dove Men Care, Natural Touch, and Pampering Body Lotion.
To ensure public safety, NAFDAC has advised against the importation, distribution, sale, and use of Dove Beauty Cream products that may contain this harmful chemical. Importing soaps and cosmetics is restricted in Nigeria, and these products do not qualify for foreign exchange. The agency strongly recommends that anyone in possession of the recalled Dove Beauty Cream Bar Soap discontinue its use and return it to the nearest NAFDAC office.
Furthermore, NAFDAC encourages health professionals and consumers to report any adverse effects experienced after using regulated products, including Dove Beauty Cream, to the nearest NAFDAC office. They can also submit reports through email at pharmacovigilance@nafdac.gov.ng, or utilize the e-reporting platforms available on the NAFDAC website and the Med-safety application, which can be downloaded from the Android and iOS app stores.
By taking these precautions, NAFDAC aims to protect the public and ensure the safety of cosmetic products available in the Nigerian market.
