In honor of this year’s World Refugee Day, the African Refugees Foundation (AREF) undertook a significant effort to provide essential food supplies to vulnerable communities in Ebute Metta, Iyana Ipaja, Lawanson, Idi Araba, and various other areas of Lagos and Ogun states. The distribution of food was spearheaded by former Lagos East lawmaker, Senator Gbenga Ashafa.
The foundation’s CEO, Olujimi Olusola, emphasized the imperative of fostering peace through dialogue, stressing that the costs of conflict far outweigh those of peace. He highlighted the foundation’s commitment to promoting stability and supporting those affected by displacement.
Throughout Lagos and Ogun states, AREF distributed both cooked meals and raw food items to a total of 4,000 vulnerable individuals and Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs). This initiative aimed not only to alleviate immediate hunger but also to provide sustenance and hope to those facing adversity.
During his address at the event, Senator Ashafa delivered a poignant lecture on the significance of World Refugee Day as more than just a date on the calendar. He underscored the need for collective action to support the approximately 3.3 million displaced persons in Nigeria, urging that they be viewed not merely as statistics but as individuals with aspirations and dreams.
“It’s crucial to recognize that these refugees and IDPs are not just numbers. They are mothers, fathers, and children who seek to rebuild their lives given the opportunity. Our duty as a society is to offer sustainable solutions and create pathways for them to regain their dignity,” stated Ashafa passionately.
He reiterated the vital role of hope in sustaining individuals during their darkest moments. “For refugees and IDPs, hope is a lifeline—an unwavering belief in a better future, a safer environment. We must nurture this hope by providing unwavering support and avenues for them to rebuild,” he emphasized.
Ashafa further emphasized that the food distribution serves as a poignant reminder that hope endures even amidst displacement. “Throughout the upcoming week, food supplies will continue to reach vulnerable communities across Lagos and Ogun. This initiative embodies solidarity and compassion, epitomizing the theme of the 2024 World Refugee Day—hope amidst displacement.”
The event resonated deeply with attendees, reinforcing the importance of community support and unity in times of crisis. It highlighted the resilience of displaced populations and the significance of offering practical assistance that extends beyond immediate needs.
The African Refugees Foundation’s food distribution initiative not only addressed urgent hunger but also symbolized a beacon of hope and solidarity for refugees and IDPs in Lagos and Ogun states. By promoting dialogue, advocating for peace, and providing tangible support, AREF exemplified the spirit of compassion and resilience that defines World Refugee Day.
