Wike and Fubara
Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, speaking on Tuesday, revealed that his administration was facing a substantial debt burden inherited from the previous administration led by Nyesom Wike.
He mentioned that numerous contractors involved in projects initiated by Wike’s administration were seeking outstanding payments amounting to billions of Naira. This disclosure has added a new dimension to the ongoing discord between Fubara and Wike, who is also his estranged godfather.
Wike, during his tenure, earned the nickname “Mr. Projects” due to his extensive infrastructure initiatives, such as the construction of 12 flyovers, which garnered attention from dignitaries including President Bola Tinubu. Wike claimed to have settled payments for these projects, often expressing gratitude to former President Muhammadu Buhari for assisting with the settlement of outstanding funds owed to the Niger Delta states.
Fubara’s revelation of significant debts coincided with his announcement of plans to investigate Wike’s administration during his tenure. He emphasized this intention while swearing in Dagogo Iboroma as the new Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice on Monday.
Furthermore, during the inauguration of the reconstructed Aleto-Ogale-Ebubu-Eteo Road in Eleme Local Government Area, Fubara lamented the persistence of contractors demanding payments for completed projects. The presence of Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, at the ceremony added significance to the event.
Fubara reiterated the administration’s commitment to transparency by acknowledging the debt burden and vowed to provide clarity to the public regarding the state’s financial affairs. He expressed satisfaction with the commencement of celebrations marking his administration’s first anniversary, coinciding with the inauguration of the road project.
Fubara emphasized that the road, awarded to China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation, was completed within the stipulated time frame and budget. He highlighted the road’s significance as a bypass, intended to alleviate congestion on the East-West Road currently undergoing reconstruction.
Fubara stressed the administration’s dedication to supporting the Federal Government’s initiatives aimed at improving infrastructure and enhancing the lives of Nigerians. He concluded by referencing President Buhari’s mantra of “Renewed Hope,” affirming the administration’s commitment to fostering optimism and progress across the nation.
