The Niger State Police Command is currently investigating the death of an elderly beggar whose body was discovered along the roadside in Kontagora Local Government Area (LGA) of Niger State. The deceased, a 70-year-old man known as Buba, was found lifeless near the BCGA Bridge on the Kontagora-Zuru Road. This tragic incident has raised concerns within the local community, as residents speculate that the beggar may have succumbed to hunger.
Buba, who was a familiar face in the area, was often seen at various junctions in Kontagora begging for alms. Originally from Bangi, the headquarters of Magama LGA in Niger State, Buba had been living a life of poverty, relying on the generosity of passersby to survive. His death has sparked a conversation about the harsh realities faced by those who live on the streets, with many questioning whether more could have been done to help him.
The discovery of the beggar’s body was reported to the Niger State Police on the morning of August 14, 2024. Upon receiving the report, officers from the A Division in Kontagora quickly arrived at the scene. According to the Niger Police Public Relations Officer, Wasiu Abiodun, the beggar was found lying unconscious when the police reached the location. Despite the swift response, it was too late to save him, and Buba was declared dead shortly after being examined by the authorities.
Preliminary investigations by the police revealed no signs of violence on the beggar’s body, suggesting that his death might not have been caused by physical harm. However, to rule out any foul play and to determine the exact cause of death, Buba’s body was transported to the Kontagora General Hospital for a more thorough examination. The hospital’s medical team is currently conducting further tests to ascertain whether the beggar died from natural causes, starvation, or any other factors.
As the investigation continues, the beggar’s remains have been placed in the hospital’s mortuary, where they will be kept until burial arrangements are made. The incident has highlighted the vulnerability of beggars and the need for greater social support systems to protect those who live on the margins of society.
The Niger State Police have urged anyone with information about the beggar or his circumstances to come forward to assist in the ongoing investigation. The authorities are committed to uncovering the truth behind Buba’s death, ensuring that all avenues are explored to bring closure to this unfortunate case.
